December

The weather was cool and hiking in all of the areas around Las Vegas was pleasant. We were still waiting for winter snow in the high mountains.

November

The weather had cooled off. November was a nice time to explore Red Rock, Lake Mead and Colorado River along with the deserts. Our trip to Mount Jefferson South Summit and North Schell Peak in Central Nevada was a great adventure, even though an extremely cold one.

October

Autumn had come to our local mountains. The aspens were in color and the temperatures were pleasant. Mule deer would still frequent Spring Mountains meadows and some wildflowers were still in bloom.

September

We have returned from an awesome 'Wheeler (New Mexico) to Wheeler' (Nevada) adventure trip via beautiful Colorado. We reached the highest point of New Mexico for the first time ever and experienced the first snow of the season in the Rockies. It was nice to be back on the colorful and high Colorado Fourteeners. The Great Sand Dunes were fun and the Great Basin National Park as remote, peaceful and picturesque as ever.

  1. Mount Taylor, New Mexico- 9/05- one of the four sacred peaks of the Navajo nation.
  2. Wheeler Peak- New Mexico's highest point and Mount Walter-second highest in NM- 9/6
  3. Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado- 9/7
  4. Alpine lakes of Blanca Massif, Sangre de Cristo Range, Colorado (Mount Blanca turned out to be to difficult for our dog and we turned around near the saddle when all the boulders got too big for him)- 9/8- 9/9
  5. Mount Antero ( 14, 269 feet), Sawatch Range, Colorado- 9/12 ( For a doggy version click here)
  6. Mount Elbert attempt in thundersnow, Sawatch Range, Colorado's highest ( 14, 433 feet)- 9/14 ( We turned around at 14,100 feet when we heard the first loud thunder!)
  7. Wheeler Peak- Nevada's second highest and Bald Mountain, Great Basin National Park- 9/1

August was a good month with a few trips to the higher mountains planned. We have visited the beautiful Tushar Range in Utah with a goal of watching Mountain Goats and the trip was a success.

July was hot in Las Vegas Valley! It was a time for the high mountain adventures. There was still a lot of snow patches in the high country and the alpine wildflowers were blooming.

We had our first lightning storm at the end of June. Many wildfires have caused poor visibility in the area.

  5. Three Peak Hike ( long route) , Mt. Charleston, Nevada - 7/9
  6. McFarland Peak ( via North Canyon), Mt. Charleston, Nevada- 7/17
  7. Griffith Peak via Harris Springs, Mt. Charleston, Nevada - 7/20
  8. Charleston Peak via Wallace Canyon loop ( over 4,000 feet of elevation gain in less than 3 miles), Mt. Charleston, Nevada- 7/27

June was very warm in Las Vegas Valley as expected. To enjoy much cooler temperatures we have hiked mostly in Mt. Charleston area. All the waterfalls were flowing there and Fletcher Canyon had more water than we have ever seen before.
Red Rock Canyon wildflowers have not been as abundant as the ones in Lake Mead, Nelson area or Death Valley this year, but still beautiful and worth seeing.

May was a good month with many adventure hikes and wildlife viewing in Red Rock Canyon and snow climbs in Mt. Charleston, Nevada. There was an abundance of water in many of the canyons.

  5. Kelso Dunes (700 feet high) and Cima Road in the Mojave NP - 5/9
  6. Oak Peak loop ascending via south fork of Oak Creek and descending the north fork, Red Rock, Nevada - 5/10 (Bonus - a herd of Bighorn Sheep).
  7. Bridge Point via Fern Canyon - 5/14
  8. Bridge Mountain Attempt - 5/16 (We turned around due to 50 mph winds).
  9. Griffith Peak via Echo Canyon, Mt. Charleston, Nevada- 5/18
  10. Charleston Peak via Big Falls, Mt. Charleston - 5/22
  11. Big Falls and Mary Jane Falls, Mt. Charleston - 5/24

April has been a very busy month. The weather was warming up and hiking in the Red Rock National Conservation Area was good. There was an abundance of water in all the canyons. The snow has started to melt; but, this had been a very productive winter in Southern Nevada. We switched from snowshoes to crampons for the high mountain adventures to Willow Peak and Hayford Peak.

  11. Spring Peak in Red Rock - 4/27

March was a great month to enjoy all the wildflowers. There was an abundance of them in the areas around Lake Mead and Death Valley.
