Greece (Ελλάδα), Europe

Greece is located in the south-eastern Europe. It lies by Aegean, Meditteranean and Ionian Seas. Many islands are part of Greece. Athens is the capital of Greece and its largest city.

Greece is the cradle of Western civilization. It is where democracy, philosophy, science, literature, theatre and sports were born more than 2000 years ago.

Historical Sites:

The Acropolis is a mammoth, steep-sided rock outcropping overlooking Athens. The Parthenon and other main buildings on the Acropolis were built by Pericles in the 5th century BC. The focal point of the Acropolis complex is the stunning Parthenon. It was erected to honor Athena, the city's protecting goddess.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus was the largest Corinthian style temple built in ancient Greece. Today only 16 columns have survived from the original temple. One of them lies on the ground since 1852, when it was hit by lightning.

Delphi in Greek mythology was the meeting place of the two eagles released by Zeus and sent in opposite directions and thus indicating the centre of the world. It was also the site of the Oracle of Apollo that attracted pilgrims from across the ancient world. Modern visitors to Delphi follow exactly the same path along the "Sacred Way" that was followed by the ancients...

Corinth was inhabited as early as in the final part of the Stone Age between 5000-3000 BC. However, the peak period of the town started in the 8th century BC. Archeological excavations revealed the agora, temples, fountains, baths and more.

Mount Olympus National Park:

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece. Its name in classical Greek means "the luminous one". Mytikas is the highest peak in the massive at 2917meters. The mountain is situated near the Aegean Sea and is rich in tree and plant life, supporting over 1700 different species. North of Mount Olympus lies Macedonia, the homeland of Alexander the Great.
