Lake Mead National Recreation Area was established in 1964. It is a 1.5 million acres of rugged and remote beauty and colors. The options for off trail hikes to numerous peaks, canyons, the Colorado River and to the shores of Lake Mead are endless. There are no crowds. In fact, you may not meet a single person hiking all day around here. It is also a great place for wildlife and plant viewing as three of the American desert ecosystems- the Mojave, the Great Basin and the Sonoran Desert meet here.
