Delphi is located on a plateau on the slope of Mount Parnassus. It was revered throughout the ancient times as the centre of the universe and the site of the most important Oracle of the god Apollo. The priestess of the oracle was known as the Pythia. The oracle was consulted before all major undertakings. The prophecies were given only between spring and autumn. In the winter months Apollo was said to have deserted his temple.
Delphi was also the site of Pythian Games. They were held every 4 years at the sanctuary of the Apollo. Besides athletic events they also included competitions for music and poetry. The winners were awarded laurel wreaths.
Today Delphi is an archeological site and a modern town.
