Hadrian's Wall

Roman World Heritage Site

Hadrian's Wall is one of the largest remains of the Roman occupation in Great Britain.

This great feat of Roman engineering was 73.5 miles long, 6 feet high and 8 feet thick in its prime.

It was built out of stone and turf and stretched across the narrow part of the island to prevent military raids of the tribes of Scotland. The construction started on the orders of Emperor Hadrian after his visit in Britannia in 122 AD. It was called Vallum Hadriani in Latin and was to ensure peaceful conditions in the Roman province.

Today, there are 82 miles (132 km) of hiking trails near Hadrian's Wall.
